Money Smart Week (MSW) offers about 180 events developed to help Iowans of all ages better manage their finances. These financial literacy seminars are free, open to the public, and are educational, not sales pitches. Over 200 partnering organizations include financial institutions, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and community groups across Iowa.
Money Smart Week is: April 5-12, 2014
One statewide MSW initiative is the Money Smart Kid Essay Contest. The Iowa Bankers Association and Iowa Credit Union Foundation are pleased to again sponsor this annual contest in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
- One student will be named this year’s Money Smart Kid and receive a $1,000 award.
- The winner and finalists may be invited to read their essays at one or more Money Smart Week events.
- Students in grades 7-11 may enter the contest by answering the question below, using no more than 300 words.

The 2014 Question is:
Any investment has a certain amount of risk and an expected return. Describe to a potential investor how investing in you (such as paying for more education) will produce a return. Please discuss types of risk the investor could face.
The deadline to submit an essay is March 14, 2014.
A winner will be announced by April 5, 2014.
